The connection dies, the dialling tone sounds off,
As you switch your attention and feign a sick cough.
‘I better go now, your dad needs help,
There’s someone at the door, can’t you hear the dog yelp?’
But before I utter a despondent ‘okay’,
The light turns off and the screen turns grey.
I’m back here alone, with no welcome voice to hear,
Back to my world, plagued with self-doubt and fear.
